I just sent out the July edition of my IBS email newsletter – just visit the IBS Tales homepage and fill in the box on the left side of the page to join up – and one of the things I wrote about was how difficult it is when you’re going through a bad IBS episode that involves constipation and hard stools and bottom-shredding bowel movements, because all of these things are so impossible to talk about in normal life and they leave you isolated and alone.
And I got this ‘your email is undeliverable’ message as one of my replies:
“A message you sent triggered a rule. Subject: ‘Sophie’s IBS newsletter July 2009′. The following 1 rule(s) were triggered: Rule ‘EMBC RULE – Block rude words in body’: [CONTENT: Message content contains ' rectum'].”
Ah, the delicious irony. Even the computers want me to pipe down.

Hi Sophie, Ive just stumbled across your site whilst researching IBS.
I’ve just suffered through the worst agonizer pains ever! I havent been diagnosed with IBS yet but im pretty sure that is what they are going to say. Is there any medication I can buy in the meantime to help at all? I bought some buscopan (sp) tablets from asda and they seem to help a little.
Thanks
Sarah
Hi Sarah – sorry to hear you’re (maybe!) a fellow sufferer!
In terms of general medications over the counter there’s really only anti-spasmodics like Buscopan, Colofac and Colpermin. Fiber supplements with soluble fiber in can work for both diarrhea and constipation but need time to work, and then there are things like Imodium for diarrhea and laxatives for constipation.
There are reviews of these treatments on this section of IBS Tales at http://www.ibstales.com/treatment-reviews.htm. I hope the doctor’s meeting goes well and you get some good advice, best of luck.
having ibs-d I feel so depressed and as though no one understands me. My faimly do their best but get get up with me always needing a loo now , athe most inconvenient times.
Days out,ect are a nightmare although thankfully I coped with son’s recent graduation, but have had a dreadful flare up this week which has set me back . It also weakens you
I cant understand the flare up as I have followed my diet (as set out by a dietician ) faithfully. Am now scared of going out.
Still I had 2 good months and thought I was getting there but after yesterday am back to square one.
Please try Digestive Advantage IBS. You won’t be sorry. It has changed my life…
